First Week Down

So, how was the first week of classes? Did you go to all your classes? Honestly, there is only one correct answer to that question! Not going to class is very costly. Yes, financially very expensive – we will cover that later.

But now I want to share a study tool that I recently found. This tool brings studying and technology together – online flashcards for Android and Apple products. I have not used this product myself, but everything I have read is promising.  www.studyblue.com

Important Dates
Today is the last day to add a class.

MEPS (Materials Engineering Professional Society)
Calling all MSE Peeps for the traditional MEPS Tailgate on Monday from 5-7 on the Holden Lawn for the Georgia Tech vs. VT game.  As always… students please feel free to bring a friend, staff and faculty & alum please bring your family. There is no cost for food and a vegetarian option will be available.

Helpful Tools
One of the most important things we can all do is getting a good night’s sleep. There are NO benefits of staying up all night to cram – so DON’T do it.

The Harvard Women’s Health Watch suggests six reasons to get enough sleep:
  1. Learning and memory: Sleep helps the brain commit new information to memory through a process called memory consolidation. In studies, people who’d slept after learning a task did better on tests later.
  2. Metabolism and weight: Chronic sleep deprivation may cause weight gain by affecting the way our bodies process and store carbohydrates, and by altering levels of hormones that affect our appetite.
  3. Safety: Sleep debt contributes to a greater tendency to fall asleep during the daytime. These lapses may cause falls and mistakes such as medical errors, air traffic mishaps, and road accidents.
  4. Mood: Sleep loss may result in irritability, impatience, inability to concentrate, and moodiness. Too little sleep can also leave you too tired to do the things you like to do.
  5. Cardiovascular health: Serious sleep disorders have been linked to hypertension, increased stress hormone levels, and irregular heartbeat.
  6. Disease: Sleep deprivation alters immune function, including the activity of the body’s killer cells. Keeping up with sleep may also help fight cancer.

Ut Prosim
Last week I asked you what it means to serve. Are you active once a year or always standing for a cause? Another way to serve is to lead. You can lead others into service or help others in discovery.  Student Centers and Activities offer a certificate program in leadership that is so worth checking out.

Leadership Tech provides transformative experiences that cultivate students' leadership abilities for engagement in positive social change.

The Department of Engineering Science and Mechanics (ESM), and the Center for Peace Studies and Violence Prevention (CPSVP) are proud to announce the Norris Hall Art Show beginning June 15, 2012 and ending September 24, 2012. ESM and CPSVP Faculty and Staff will be featured. Head over to 2nd floor of Norris to check out the featured art before the show closes.
