Samhainophobia is the fear of Halloween

Years ago I drove my son and his friends to the skate park in Blacksburg early on a Saturday morning in October. After a few hours we left and were driving through Blacksburg. As I was driving I saw something and mumbled to myself. The kids asked what I was talking to myself about.  As we passed another bus stop I pointed to a group of people in ragged Halloween costumes looking really rough; leaning on the bus stop pole, laying on the bench, bent over the bench. One was bent half over with both arms full extended holding onto the bus stop pole. The kids asked what they were doing in costume at 10am. I had the pleasure of explaining “the walk of shame” to my then 14 year old and his friends.

I tell you this because my youngest son is now 12 and I don’t want to explain “the walk of shame” to him any time soon!

Helpful Tools
Procrastination is an ugly word. To some degree, we all have dealt with procrastination in some form or another. Personally, I haven’t unpacked a few boxes from my move (moved in to our new home 3 weeks ago).  The reasons behind why we procrastinate can be vast and very with each of us.  I don’t want to touch that box and you don’t want to write that paper!  Getting over that hump to get the task done is just as hard for me as it is for you.  Here are some helpful tips for both of us…
  • Make the tasks look small and easy in your mind. ("I've written lots of excellent papers; this is just one more paper.")
  • Do only a small part of the task each time. ("I'll just check out the books tonight. Later on, I'll glance through them.")
  • Five-minute plan: Work on something for just five minutes. At the end of five minutes, switch to something else if you want. Chances are, you'll get involved enough to keep going.
  • Advertise your plans to accomplish something, and let peer pressure push you forward. ("I told everyone that I was going to finish this tonight.")
  • Use a good friend as a positive role model. If you have trouble concentrating, study in the presence of someone who doesn't.
  • Modify your environment - if you can't study at home, find a place where you can study; or, change your study situation at home.
  • Plan tomorrow and establish priorities - some students find that simply writing down reasonable starting and stopping times help them get going.
  • Expect some backsliding. Don't expect to be perfect even when you're trying to get rid of perfectionism! So occasionally, your plans will not work. Accept setbacks and start again.
