Make Safety a Daily Theme

Do you remember the first time you wore a seatbelt?  I do.

I was about 5, my brother was three. My entire family (mom, dad, me & Jake) were in this tiny red bench-seat Ford pick-up truck. My dad started teasing my mom, saying “I’m gonna flip the Ford.” She freaked, yelling at him to slow down while franticly putting a seat belts around her & my brother then one on me. My father continued to gain speed as he crested the hill he turned the little Ford logo on the steering wheel upside down. Needless to say, she was unhappy!

After that, my brother and I always had to wear seat belts in the car with my mom. She began reading all these safety studies about seat belts. Finally, convinced my father to wear one … suggested that he wears a belt when flying a plane why not wear one while driving a car.

Do you remember your first driving lesson? I do! As I was about to put the key in the ignition and my father stopped me and said, “You are not only responsible for your life, but mine and the lives of everyone around this car. Now start the engine.” I froze.

Make safety the theme of every day.

Helpful Tools
Study tips from someone who isn’t me. (http://www.whitspeaks.com/2012/08/study-tips-from-honors-nerd.html)

  1. Hide your kids/wife phone somewhere not in your immediate vicinity and TURN IT OFF/ON SILENT
  2. Try to get away from the internet if possible. I like to print out my homework and use my notes and book, so that way I cant sneak away to dangerous places like Facebook.
  3. The library is an amazing place to focus
  4. I'm most productive between my classes and in the mornings/early afternoons, so I always try to get my work done then!
  5. If you get to class early, review your notes from the previous days! It helps the info stick and you aren't trying to remember what class you're in when the professor starts talking
  6. Tea, not coffee, at least for me. Tea gives me a more subtle energy boost and coffee just makes me wired and less focused, plus it always makes me have to pee.
  7. ALWAYS pack snacks! For both class and a long study sesh it's been sooo helpful to get my blood sugar back on the rise so I can stay energized and alert!
  8. I write my notes in black pen, and when it's time to study I go through and color-code with highlighters. Yellow: main subject, idea, or term. Orange: definition of term, elaboration, or something to know. Pink: examples. Blue: use it to star stuff the professor mentioned would definitely be on test/quiz. (I warned you in the title of this post that Im a nerd.)
  9. Never ever ever study in bed. Ever. You will fall asleep whether it's 11am or 11pm.
  10. Study with people! I know everyone always says this but it is SO helpful! When you are explaining something to another person it helps reinforce the facts in your brain, and it's fun.
