Safety on the Web

According to my mother-in-law, if you don’t put any information about yourself on the web you are safe because no one has your information. (Stop laughing.) We know that isn’t true. Our information is out there: we put it there, the banks put it there, our government put it there, our friends put it there, the library, and on and on and on. And once it is out there you cannot get it back.

Each of you are at a delicate phases in your young adult life (growing up). You still want to be young (and maybe do stupid things from time to time) but yet you need to prep yourself for the next phase of your life.  Currently your friends look at your Facebook. But one day your potential employer will too. What picture do you want the employer to see?

Sharing information about yourself is going to be done. But what information you share is your call.

While you are a student we would like you to protect your student identification number just as you would your driver’s license number or social security number. Please do not share this number on social media or in an e-mail. We protect your student ID number – so should you.

Last week we explored the types of teams. Today I want to share the 6 common elements effective teams share….

• A meaningful common purpose
• Specific performance goals
• A balance of complementary skills and roles
• Trust and a safe environment where conflict can be productive
• A strong commitment to how work gets done
• Mutual accountability

If a team doesn’t have all of these the team may not be functioning to its full potential.

I’m sure you have heard from Malala Yousafzai by now. If not, you should have.

She is an amazing young woman – the youngest to be considered for the Nobel Peace Prize. Scheduled meeting times are available 10-11:30 & 1:30-4.

To schedule a meeting please log into your Scholar account. Under the MSE Undergraduate Advising Tab use the sign-in tool to select a meeting time. Please know it will be necessary to click on “expand all recurring meetings” to see all available dates, then click on the date you would like to schedule a meeting and the available times will show. Currently, meeting times are available through the end of October.
