Forecast

Oh Boy, Oh Boy! It’s going to snow next week. But seriously, there is a disturbance building somewhere and could head this way. However, it’s a week away! So please don’t buy up all the milk in the store today (leave some for my son).

In the bizarre event a snow flake does fall next week please do not assume it would be a good day to sleep in. A safe rule of thumb is; if the BT is running so is VT. However, that isn’t always the case as it takes some time to get all the buses off the road. So, your best option is to call the VT weather line at 540.231.6686. An announcement will be made here before the alert is sent to your phone.

Important Dates

December 6 – summer course request begins
December 11 – last day of classes
December 13-19 – Finals

Helpful Tools
A recap:
  • We form management teams, recommendation teams, and development teams.
  • Teams should have a common purpose, specific goal, members should be accountable.
  • Members should have 9 different characteristics.  No one member should have all 9!
  • There are 12 different roles that need to be carried out for the team to move forward.
  • Finally, there are 5 common warning signs of a dysfunctional team.
Let’s assume we have this team and things are not clicking, tasks are not getting done and there’s a lot of finger pointing.  What to do?

It takes one person, not necessarily the ‘team leader’ but just one person to interrupt a meeting and say ‘our dysfunction is not fun’ or maybe something more professional like ‘we are not working as well as we should. Let’s take time to get our team back on track.’

One such exercise help everyone get back on track is to have everyone respond on paper to these 5 questions.
  1. In earlier teams you’ve worked on, what you did that you felt made an impact on the team’s work
  2. What are you accountable for on this team?
  3. What do you see standing in your way?
  4. What are your ideas for addressing these challenges?
  5. What’s going to make you proud when this project is completed?
The important part of this exercise is that everyone is free and open to share their responses with the group without judgment or ridicule. These reflections should not be personal attacks but statements to the project. Use this shared information to improve the team communication and move forward.

Turkeys have heart attacks. The United States Air Force was doing test runs and breaking the sound barrier. Nearby turkeys dropped dead with heart attacks.

Serving others never gets old; take Jim Cummings for example. Mr. Cummings is the voice of Winnie The Pooh and Tigger. He gives by volunteering with The Make-A-Wish Foundation. In character, he calls sick children stuck in hospital rooms.

Cummings recalls a child whom he spoke to, a little boy with autism: "He asked me to do all the voices, even small parts that I had done -- extraneous characters. Then his mother, crying, got on the phone and said, 'He doesn't speak.' I said, 'He's been speaking for over an hour.' And she said, 'No, my son doesn't speak -- he's never spoken this much before.' I videotaped this for his doctor."
