December 17, 1903

What have you done so far today? Think about it.Did you wake by an alarm clock or alarm on your phone? Either one is an engineering accomplishment.  Did you shower?  Did you open a door using a door knob? Did you zip a zipper?  All of these things, seem so insignificant today but so important to our daily lives. All are engineering accomplishments we take for granted.

What is your favorite engineering accomplishment? The elevator – flat screen TV – etch-a-sketch – indoor cooking – spiral notebooks?  My favorite engineering accomplishment was dreamt by two brothers; Orville and Wilbur. Imagine where we would be today without the ability travel by aircraft.

Take for a few minutes and think about how crazy with was for them to dream of developing a flying machine. No one had done it before so they spent 4 years of trial and error before the first flight. That first flight only lasted 12 seconds & traveled 120 feet.

Do this – hold your breath for 12 seconds. Now, never let anyone tell you something cannot be done just because it has never been done before.

Santa Claus, like all pilots, gets regular visits from the Federal Aviation Administration, and it was shortly before Christmas when the FAA examiner arrived. In preparation, Santa had the elves wash the sled and bathe all the reindeer. Santa got his logbook out and made sure all his paperwork was in order. The examiner walked slowly around the sled. He checked the reindeer harnesses, the landing gear, and Rudolf's nose. He painstakingly reviewed Santa's weight and balance calculations for the sled's enormous payload.

Finally, they were ready for the check ride. Santa got in, fastened his seatbelt and shoulder harness, and checked the compass. Then the examiner hopped in carrying, to Santa's surprise, a shotgun.

"What's that for?" asked Santa incredulously.

The examiner winked and said, "I'm not supposed to tell you this, but you're gonna lose an engine on takeoff."
