And finally... The lab portion of MSE 4334 appears to overlap with Senior Recitation on the time table. Dr. Staley, Dr. Suchicital, and Dr. Murayama have discussed the overlap. Dr. Murayama will hold his lab every other week in Holden after recitation – exact dates have yet to be determined. Because of the overlap you will not be able to add this course – please email me ASAP if you want to be added to MSE 4334.

So why, over the past few weeks, have I been telling you about the different generations in the work place? Well, for starters you will be there one day. In addition to that, you need to have an understanding of communicating with people outside your generation – they are everywhere!

I’ve shared two examples of the different generations in the work place; the first about communication and the second about knowledge employees. Again, you ask, why do I need to know this?

For various reasons people change employment. I don’t want to go into all the various reasons now – that is a topic for another day. I do want to look one reason: communication. Many people leave a job because they think they dislike the way information is shared. Do they truly understand why the people are communicating and sharing information they way they do? Do they understand it is generationaly based?

Why is this important? Replacing an employee is time consuming and expensive. To replace an employee who earns $8 an hour would cost the company $3,500 to replace. That is an estimate to replace the labor – it is very difficult to put a cost of the knowledge of the employee. Referring to last week’s example … how much will it cost the company with Jack retires?  Those of you who want to start your own company one day will be asking this very question.
